Open International Adoptions?

Photobucket
I read an article titled Untying a Birth Mother's Hands in the NYTimes Online this morning. Take a moment to read it. It is a great article.

There were so many parts of this article that rang true for our family.

We are fortunate to have two "open" international adoptions.

These relationships are complicated.

Language, distance, time and money all work together to make things extraordinarily complex.

I acknowledge that we hold all the power in both of these relationships while our children are young.

We feel the weight of that privilege.

We are keenly aware of the pain and beauty possible in these relationships as they change over time.

This was not what we expected when we began the adoption process so long ago but I have great hope that it will be good.

"We feel the weight of that privilege." Such an accurate way to describe the situation. We have just visited our older daughter's family for the first time in Ethiopia and have promised to do the same with our second, who we just adopted. It is complicated, but it is so, so worth it.
